Chihei Hatakeyama / Variations
Soundscaping

Unlike some previous works of mine to which preceding imaginary visuals were employed, the theme of "Variations" focuses upon production per se, intentionally excluding such leading elements like visuals or narratives. My usual production method may be described as composing in real-time DSP software environments such as Max/MSP and Reaktor, handling pre-recorded sound particles heavily-processed times again into different forms, often to an extent there remains no trace of the originals. Producing this album gave me an opportunity to contemplate what this compositional manner of mine means and what processed sound is.

Observing sound particles in my production re-appearing in updated guises many times through numerous transformations, I reached a point where I could try to see sound on my palette as something akin to water. This happened in my personal point of view as an experiment, but each of the sound materials in my work in progress seemed having something in common with water. 'Water' was not appropriate for the album's title, because it was not a primary motif, although there might be some tracks that remind of it.

Performing using computers is another important theme for the album. I started producing the tracks comprised in "Variations" in late 2008. Around that time I quit composing with MIDI, instead began concentrating on performing sound files on Reaktor and Max/MSP. Shortly afterwards I ended up to find infinite possibilities sound files indigenously have. This discovery brought me the idea of 'variations played on sound files', which is the reason why the album was named "Variations".
